Motorway Birds

rooks black companions
of torn rubber cast
along the lay-bys
untidy with wind-
wrenched feathers flap down
to noise-level where
people emerge from cars

kestrels quivering dip
slide the balance of wind
pin out the green line
of their motorway, eyes
focus down pick off
minute warm traffic of
mice and voles
