i'd stop reading your work if its sheer brilliance failed to piss me off and make me envious. go ahead, write another masterpiece and show me up. see if i care. you can even rub it in, too!

I'm astonished that I haven't posted a comment here before. How would this look on the dust-jacket of Michael's e-book here on PH: 'I could think of far worse ways to spend my time than reading the 414 (as of Nov, '05) poems in the 'complete PH works' of Michael Shepherd.' If Michael hadn't found Poemhunter, Poemhunter would have had to go out and get him. He makes it possible to at least sometimes bring at least a *veneer* of civilization to the Forum discussion group. Most days his warm, witty, and/or profound poems are some of the ones I read first.
(AND, I know a poet here in America I think of as 'the American Michael Shepherd'-or alternately, M as 'the English Phil Phillips'. And I'm taking up a collection to get them together!)

Michael, I have only just discovered this comments page! So, can I take the opportunity to tell you that I enjoy and admire your work and am particularly interested in the spiritual aspect of it. Can I also thank you for your encouraging and often amusing comments on my stuff. Regards, Gol

Michael, I can't believe I have never been on your comments page. I have read and enjoyed much of your work. You have often brought a modicum of decorum to the web-site. Yet, more importantly, you have offered some very laconic poetry and presented much food for thought. I like your style and salute your sonnets. You have also never failed to present yourself in a gentlemanly way, and are always there with words of encouragement (for even MY laughable attempts at writing a 'sonnet') . You are a paradigm of consistency and a bastion of erudition and good sense. Having said all that, can I loan some money?

    Best regards, A.K.47

Michael Shepherd is a poet who has mastered the craft of poetry. He manages to blend reality and fantasy in a believable manner and shares his memories and emotions without becoming maudlin. We are blessed to have so many of his poems on this website.

'A Novel Situation' is as finely spun as it gets; the language becomes the thing itself. I was switched into the scene with the exchange of the two figures in Sz.
1, and thereafter the journey was irrevocably the reader's own. It's rare when a poem becomes the thing itself. The piece is a fascination.

Yes you think i'm angry no i just smile
and i live in the real world and to call me sick is
sad you people talked ill about my dead brother
and i fight like a mad man you asked for it
don't sit moaning now and if micheal speaks
that way about me behind my back then he is

The poem ' A grief ago' was a beautiful piece of work. I would want to ponder on it a little more. GREAT WORK! ! !

! Baby Love, Maybe Love

so there you are in
your pram or kiddikarria
nicely tucked up,
being talked to in that
that grown-ups grow down to

when that tingylingy, like
that stoopid thingy
dangling on your cot that
doesn't do anything else
goes hissdidahdidah
and she switches her attention instantly
from who's mommy's little treasure then,
sticks this silver thing to block her ear
and starts talking to thin air

it must be either the fairies
who don't seem to be very helpful -
'oh darling don't say you forgot I
asked you specially...'

0197 Being In Mind

Poets seek in poems, a truth that's yet to be:
to catch those glories half-formed in the mind,
those tantalising visions which we see
for fleeting seconds; fear may never find

again; yet leave a presence in the air,
the evanescent substance of a dream,
like half-remembered, half-forgotten care,
but known to be more real than they seem;
