The Literacy Holocaust

First they came for the
independent bookstores,
then for the newspapers
and magazines.
Then the super bookstores
were devoured by Amazon.com,
which, in turn, stopped selling
all books but talking books,
and people who listened
to them
thought they were literate.
The last of the newsstands,
stocked solely with infoporn,
disappeared
on Papernacht,
the same nacht
they rounded up
everyone in glasses.

It no longer mattered
if you COULD read.
If you looked like you could read
or even think
you were remaindered
-sent up ...
