4 A.M. Poem by Lawerence Mize, Sr.

4 A.M.

Where lies the sleeping man?
The one gone to war and back again.
Back in dreams so vivid and real.
Of faces floating free and clear.
Reliving times of better days.
Ones of friends and their winning ways.
Of sitting round eating meals.
Shoveling dirt till the sandbags fill.
Of laughing at so many things.
Of people, home, and future dreams.
While fighting back a nagging fear.
Of dying here alone and scared.
Here, in this God forsaken place.
Where death lurks in jungles
And mosquitoes bite your face.
Of battles lost and battles won.
Of men bloodied and killed
In such grotesque ways.
That drive you crazy every single day.
Here lies the sleeping man.
Back to my nightmares once again.

I'm a Vietnam vet. Still have problems sleeping at night. Wrote this last night after waking up and just staring out my kitchen window for awhile.
