A Baby - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

I stare at your eyes
Knowing that you stare at mine
With a sense of joy
Unknowing that you and I
Now share the deepest bond
That the universe has ever seen
Where in this sculpture of affection
Lies the soul of selfless giving
Where all of my labor dissolves
To the outpouring of your smile
Concocting a love that is both unconditional in deed
And unbreakable in chemistry
What was bonded in space and time
Until the first quantum of light
Leapt through your pupils
And you opened your eyelids
To radiate an afterglow
Of the miracle of first sight
