A Nova - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

In the backdrop of a pitch black veil
The twilight in her murky plumage
Is a glimmering white dwarf
Beaming endlessly from her seat
As she awaits her calling
To breathe fire
From the windpipes
Of her fiery lungs
Like a voracious dragon
A cataclysmic metamorphosis
To the scintilla of a nova
To transcend light's enigmatic soul
To burst like a balloon
Carrying in her womb
An embellishment of fireworks
To bequeath on the observant man
A spectral extravaganza
That will burn endlessly like the vestal fires
In the deepest craters
Of the inquisitive mind
