A Way To Understand The World - Poem by gordon nosworthy

i used to be a black man
until they beat me white
the question is why
fight against the inevitable
the fat lady is going to sing
the thin man is going to fart
the anyrace blowhart
is going to blow hard
with inevitable bluster

that doesn’t mean stop
struggling to breathe
struggling to defend
all the children you carry in your head
do not cease rebutting those
who want to take what you have

when others want you to be
what they want you to be
becoming irrational
just because the crowd you inhabit
thinks becoming irrational
means something
is something irrational

the mind searches for form
but not too far
it latches on
to the catchy set of ideas
the way barnacles cling
to anything that seems solid
enough to stop the waves
from moving them away from food
into the maw of non existence

that’s it that’s a way
to understand the world
stop beating the black man
out of the white man
the white man out of the black man
the hu-man out of us all
