Maya Angelou

Alone - Poem by Maya Angelou

Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

She was the embodiment of that chorus. This, and all her works, are so powerfully inspirational. (Report) Reply

    'Alone, all alone
    Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone' - a stark reality. We are meant to be bound together, yet we tend to separate ourselves!

We are who we are or where we are because of other people. In my home language: Motho ke motho ka batho. Thank you honourable Angelou (Report) Reply

    But nobody
    No, nobody
Can make it out here true. One can't do everything alone. In any welfare work there is need of unity. Beautiful poem.

So beautiful and lyrical. Nobody can make it alone. Sadly we have been pushed in a lifestyle making us more and more alone! (Report) Reply

Definitely sounds like song lyrics, and it’s easy for me to imagine this in Maya’s voice. And anyone who’d argue with the truth of this lacks the capacity for observation and/or truth-telling. -GK (Report) Reply
