POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM

This haiku by Basho seems to focus on absence, on something missing from the scene in the mind of Basho as he gazes at a full moon, fully-present overhead.This suggestive contrast is remarkable! " Rusu" is literally translated as " absence" .(The poem appears to present one more example of " sabi" in Basho's work.)
