Blue Light Special - Poem by Amanda NelD

her words used to take flight
(like a thousand paper cranes, made of everything but paper)
they're lost in the rain that doesn't fall

she stands on the edge
of the tomorrow she doesn't want to see
looking over her shoulder

her mouth
(Sunset Berry Sunrise carefully applied)
accuses silently

illuminated in the harsh neon
(blue light special at Walmart)
she's on display

searching for a way to let her demons in
she closes her eyes
her demons are more welcome than her friends

This is almost feral in tone. It hits like a hammer blow, and the last line is brilliant.
