Downhill Poem by Souren Mondal

Downhill

Rating: 5.0

Downhill

People come, people go
The door inches towards being closed.

Life
Birth, remembering faces
And disappearing ones with age.

Youth, that was once spent in
Meaningless nights drowned in cheap alcohol,
Now evaporates into gradually growing grey

Salt and pepper
Rubbing the once-vigorous heart into a
slow, painful submission.

The heart yearns for solitude
yet all it gets is loneliness….

Can we, with rust in the rod
thrust back motion into this thick inertia?

The days past when our hands toiled the dead land into greenery.

The hardships have substituted the hardness

There's no place more calm than the herd
Of those sheep, once so despised.

And I,
That poet who once thought
He was an old soul in a young man's body,

Have finally subsided

There is no resolution to the drama of life

Once you hit the point,
There is only downhill
And then uphill
And then

Downhill again…

One must imagine happiness that doesn't exist…

A very meaningful write. How you capture the whole life of man in these verses is a skill. Great flow of thoughts. There's no resolution to the drama of life....how aptly put. A10.

Souren, this poem cuts to the quick like a knife- I was going to say an unfeeling knife but the poem is full of feeling, a raw piercing wail of emotion. The unique style of delivery is perfect for this piece. And these two opening lines grab the reader by the soul- - People come, people go The door inches towards being closed. Tremendous write.10++++++++ and a place on my Fav list

Happiness is around us but we do not see it clearly, we get bogged down by the burden of pain, sorrow and desist quite often. If we learn to keep patience probably we will see that it does exists.

But there was some happiness along the way...? Yes, the last few acts are hard to take, but you still express yourself well.

I stopped in and read this again. It is truly worth reading and contemplating many times again. There is one thing though- - I would love to read a new poem by you, my friend.

This is a beautiful heartfelt poem Souren. I like your transitions across stanzas and the emotion you lay bare on the page pulls at my own aging heart too. Intensity is an interesting aspect to emotion and senses that can dull and then open like a puss-filled memory. Your feelings are not just your own. Loneliness, solitude, aging, raging love...they're all things we cling to before that door closes. It's all to be savored and flavored. I'm getting drippy now.....well done.
