Duty Calls - Poem by Allen Brodell

The heading reads
this is you call up papers
for two years of military services
compulsory service for your country

No dodging from this training
barely in your twenties
selected to service your country
despite what you may feel
in all the uncertainties of the moment
what will the future hold, you wonder?
many have lost their young lives
through the long years passed
will the same fate await you?

Loved ones wave you good - bye
as the train departs from the platform
to the camp far away from them

Their prayers are formed in their hearts
whispered in the wind
blown over you, as you
wave them good - bye

They pray for your safe arrival
and for your safe return
for God to hold you in His hands
to be covered with the wings of the Angles
to give you courage and strength

For the twenty four long monthsy
yes, two years of your life!
