Fallen - Poem by Richard Elam

In ancient days, in garden new
young Eve gave Adam fruit for two
and ever since that day of yore...
we are fallen more and more.

The tainted thing that brought us down..
takes our lives around and 'round...
started with a simple game...
to treat ourselves to fun and fame..

And I, too, have had a bite
of that sweet fruit, of enhanced sight...
for I have seen the holy place
by gazing on your sculptured face..

I watched the nuance of each move...
intensity and beauty prove...
I've bitten more than I can chew..
in watching everything you do...

For I've fallen as before...
when others walked into this door...
such grace beheld and beauty rare...
loving eyes with skin so fair...

My heart responds, my dreams take wing...
this perfect day, returning spring..
if I can choose you now, I will-
my heart would take the apple still.

But I believe no choice is mine..
I watch you go, I stand in line...
as others grasp the golden bough..
you grace them with your time endow...

I picked the fruit, I loved, I lied...
and in the end I simply cried...
for you have chosen others ways...
different places; better days...

Still, I look and wonder why
the love I have will never die...
for you, a wonder to behold...
and, I, a man whose days are old.

If only you would cast a glance
to give me just a moment's chance...
to pluck the limb; to be the man
who takes that fruit from your sure hand.

The love I have, unbidden come
makes my heart to ache and numb..
I turn away, forever lost...
into the heap of sadness tossed...

I wish for strength, I wish for peace...
to feel the joy of love’s release...
a hand to touch; an arm to hold...
two strangers in the garden fold..

And though I chose the open path...
Pandora’s box, the gods sure wrath..
and you walked down a different way...
into the brightness of the day...

I’ll love you when the day is done...
and at the waning of the sun...
for in the shadows I reside...
content to let this love abide.
