Farmer 7 - Rise! O Farmers! - Poem by Dr. Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

While I write the series of Satyagraha struggles,
Which Gandhiji launched and succeeded,
In his ventures and fight against
The dominating ruling class,
Leaving poor peasants and labourers,
Dried up, shrivelled up,
And worn out with debts and poverty,
I am thrilled to read about farmers' stir in Maharashtra.

The farmers have risen up
To fight for their rights!
The well known activist - Anna Hazare
Openly supports the farmers.
Anna Hazare, follows the Gandhian method.
Like Gandhiji, he asserts that farmers must
Agitate and protest,
But in a peaceful manner!

The farmers till the land in sunlight
They plough the fields till dusk,
They sweat it out in heat and cold,
They work till their bones ache
And can take it no more!
At the end of the day what do they get?
They silently sleep with a sunken stomach,
They just get a pittance for their hard work!

Rise! Rise! O Farmers!
Stand up for the land that you own,
Fight for your rights with unity and might!
Let me pray and pray!
May all your efforts be rewarded,
May all your loans be waived,
May all your grievances be redressed,
May you live with joy, abundance and fulfillment!

Poet's Notes about The Poem

The farmers of Maharashtra have launched a strike demanding a complete loan waiver. The protesters have planned to intensify the strike and have announced a state wide Bandh on Tueday 5th June 2017.
The farmers' stir leaves the market almost empty without any vegetables or fruits.
The prices for vegetables and fruits have shot up to high rates.

Anna Hazare is a great activist but I doubt like Vinoba Bhave he will also fail, political success depends on diertyness and he seems to be neat and clean leader. (Report)Reply

    Thank you Akhtar Sahab!
Anna Hazare is great activist but i do not think he aspires to be a great
politician. He is a simple man with noble thoughts.

What a contrast from the farmers here! In my country; they hold us to ransom and artificially bring up the prices by dumping the veggies. Most of them are very well off owning large tracts of land. Thanks Geeta for enlightening me. (Report)Reply

I am happy to know that farmers are rich in your country, but not happy to know that they are holding the people to ransom and dumping the veggies. This is news to me. You have educated me, Loke.
In India, things are different. The Farmers, in reality, should be the richest, unfortunately, they are the poorest in India because they are not given the proper value for their produce. But with the support from various NGO's, activists, their status should improve. Let us pray!
Thank you Loke, for your honest opinion.

The poem succinctly brings to fore the ordeal and the plight of our farmers who is called 'Annadata' (the provider of food or grain) but lives in utter poverty. Poet's Notes also highlight the latest agitation of Maharashtra farmers. They really deserve a better deal. Thank you, Geeta ji.
