Genesis Revised Poem by Martha J. Eshelman

Genesis Revised

And man said
'let there be light'
and there was light -
a mushroom cloud -
and darkness covered
the face of the earth
and man looked
and saw that it was evil
and his heart hardened
as the grass of the fields
withered and the birds
of the field fell and a plague
covered the barren land

then man said
let us make serums,
splice genes, grow food
in hydroponic hermetic rooms;
hide from the winter
blight, the swollen
corpses of song birds;
enshire our hearts
in an acrid lie
