Greatest Gift - Poem by poppy penn

As you’re born, life begins,
Ready to exist and regret your sins.
Born into colour, religion, nationality and creed;
Discriminating people because of this must be obscene.

We are all human, all one race,
All equal, all born in one place.
Prejudice and segregation leading to homicide,
Be proud of who you are - stand with pride.

Hatred, scorn, jealousy and transgression,
We are all unique, all different, all special.
All with inner beauty so don’t despise,
Your perception of people, the deceit through your eyes.

The greatest gift in life is the opportunity to change humanity,
Not to start war and enforce more insanity.
People will come and people will go,
But comprehend the results of your actions will show.

Embracing life as a gift and maximising your abilities,
No matter what your conditions and what your facilities,
We take things for guarantee - water, clothing and food
Care and love from parents, from the day we were nude.

But when you wake up one day; just think about others,
How they are surviving; sleeping under no covers.
Without any love, and without their mothers,
All alone without sisters and brothers.

Poverty, disease, illness and war,
Why don’t we stop this, why ask for more,
Inhabitants of Earth could prevent this entire affliction,
Annihilate this dilemma with reconciliation and conviction.

Life is an object breathing fresh air,
For several it is cleaner, for others gasping is despair.
It’s your spirit you’re in, it’s up to you how you use it,
Drugs, theft and murder, it’s your choice if you abuse it.

Live your life as you desire, live every day as it comes,
You may not get another chance, so live with joy and fun.
If you don’t live life today you might not be here tomorrow
Leaving friends and family to mourn and sorrow.

Natural hazards are so abrupt,
Killing innocents is so corrupt,
Hurricanes and tsunamis dominate the air,
As people are washed away and others look and fear.

Unknown and unheard it swoops like a bird,
Many people believe it must be absurd.
Nature’s course no man can stop,
All that’s left is for him to drop.

And when it’s over, all left is debris and rubble,
For existing people, many years of trouble.
Immense structures come down and die,
Suffering individuals; we hear their cries.

The greatest gift in life is not presents at birthdays and celebrations,
But being alive and living as one of God’s creations.
Having health, having hands, having heart and having soul,
Having the ability to change life, having targets, having goals.

Being able to touch, taste, hear, smell and see,
Living as people on Earth, one day not to be.
But there is one thing in life, the greatest gift of all
And that is life itself!
