A single oar plies the waves
then the sound... a second time
I miss you—I miss you.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The speaker of the poem, reflecting on Basho's haiku 'Ro no koe nami o utte', writes a poem in similar fashion on a similar theme, more literally expressed in his poem than in Basho's: at the sound of each oar stroke, especially the second, he misses his friend. The classical Japanese idea of 'sabi' (loneliness) is invoked in this poem as it is in Basho's.
