How Could You? - Poem by Anna Dietze

How could you come home tonight
After a long night of work and drinking
No one can say or do the right thing
Hiding in the corner
In a ball, holding my ears
Wishing it would all go away
Or at least the yelling and the fighting

How could you hurt your family like this
When you say you love us
You leave marks and bruises
Like it was never true
You say “I’m sorry” and “It was the alcohol”
But yet the same things happen constantly
I never saw a change like you promised

How could you leave us like this
When it obviously wasn’t your time
But when that car hit, it didn’t seem to matter
Yes, I remember being your only little girl
Then again, this is what I mostly remember:
Crying, shaking, yelling, screaming, hitting, pushing, hiding, praying, hating
I will never drink a dropp in my life
For I know the damage it can cause
Hold me to that promise
Because I will still always love you
You may not be here physically but you will always be here mentally and spiritually.
