I Am Still Standing - Poem by Dr Ronnie Bai

how many times on the world’s heavyweight
canvas i have been sent to sprawl
since sparring my life around
as barely a bantamweight
i was thrown into its ring
i cannot recall
but crouching and clinching, I am still standing - -

how many quarts of blood
i have been made to bleed
and how many teeth have i got knocked off
i cannot keep count of
i am gaudy and i am giddy
but ducking and breaking, I am still standing - -

how many times have i protested of
underbelly hitting, tripping, biting, and kneeing
the referee ignores me
the spectators of plastic cups of beer shush me
i open the dark hole of my mouth
drinking my own spit
but parrying and blocking, I am still standing - -

i am an amateur but not allowed a helmet
i am bare-fisted, but all my opponents
pack dynamite in gloves
i am concussed
but swaying and fading, I am still standing - -

no trainer, no manager, no doctor, and no promoter
i spar my own life around and lick my own wounds
into the alien air jabbing and punching
I am still standing - -
Show me three blank scorecards
but do not send me outside the ring
I am still standing - -

Poet's Notes about The Poem

Reflection on life, which is hardly a fair and equitable one for anyone.
