I Believed In Unicorns - Poem by gordon nosworthy

i wanted to hold the universe
unbroken and unyielding in my hand
i wanted sparks
to comet off my fingertips
i wanted to feel the power of unfolding stars
i wanted to at least love myself

i can't hear my heart
i listen hard for the slightest murmur
the room is dark and deaf
very large highly armed creatures sniff
parole the perimeter with all the dreams
i do not want to acknowledge

i wanted what i cannot define
hands lost in clay
dampened with all the portents and signs
i am unable to read as they shoot
across time turn the night sky
even darker and more sardonic

as always the universe has the last giggle
i am more or less a momentary flicker
while it is more or less a hand
with no idea who i am
while i barely wield enough significance
to keep my heart remembering how to thump
