I Can Promise Only This - Poem by Kelly Kurt

You can ask anything of me and I will attempt
You can tell me to smile, when grief is my shadow
You can stick me with pins and require my stillness
Take all my possessions and demand more
You can mandate the improbable and I will comply
But I can promise only this
To do my best

Pressures mount with all of these requests so artfully stated as if they are only poetry into the form of external actions. All of these requests could be fulfilled to the asker's satisfaction. But that's not really the point: The point is you'll do as MUCH AS YOU CAN. That's your promise: you will give them everything up the the edge of your ability. That makes this a subtle poem of integrity. Those who need favors better read these words carefully
so they don't ask for too much.

    i REFUSE TO LOOK FARTHER/further for any previous comment by me! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

i'm waiting for at least one more word to appear in line #1.

comply sounds too strong where it is used. maybe another attempt is in order.

exactly what is 'your' best? ?

    bri :)

i'll look for your best in one or two more poems.

A great poem on a fundamental truth. Sometimes our values are not as clear. I like the way it speaks of honesty from the heart. (Report) Reply

Thought provoking. In everything we can do our best, and in most circumstances our best will be good enough. (Report) Reply

My best sometimes still ends in failure, but I never have to doubt that I tried.

This is a very special poem. The poem says that aggressors or inquirers may demand or ask so many personal affairs in various ways but we only can try to give them answers. Our answers are also various. Sure, we should and we have to give proper answer however and in whatever we can. I love this poem and many thanks to the honorable Poet for sharing. (Report) Reply

Absolutely for the best outcome is better than worst it can get under circumstances. I guess trying times are for trying.
