I Knew - Poem by Tamara Moir

I always knew, that,
Looking back on the tears
Would make me laugh
I never thought, that,
Looking back on the laughs,
Would make me cry.

I always knew, that,
I would never forget you
You were my first kiss
I never thought, that,
You wouldn’t leave my mind
Now you’re all I think about.

I always knew, that,
I would have to see you
Every now and then
I never thought, that,
I would see you every day
As my new neighbor

I always thought, that,
You didn’t love me
That’s why I left
I never knew, that,
You did love me
With all your heart

Now I’ll never know
What it would have been like
To be with you.
He’s gone from my life
Not metaphorically
Literally
He’s dead.
Never to live, or love, again

I always knew, that,
Looking back on the tears
Would make me laugh
I never thought, that,
Looking back on the laughs
Would make me cry.
