I Used To Be Normal... - Poem by Slava Olchevski

I used to be normal, now I am natural
I can prove it with a certificate
That special paper, I obtained yesterday
From Catholic Church’s highest pontificate

Just kidding, the Pope in Rome
Has nothing to do with my situation
And the document I am talking about
Is the Certificate of Naturalization

From now on I truly belong
I sincerely joined one great nation
It took me over 10 calendar years
Before I arrived at that destination

My natural instincts, my horoscope
Even the words of my dying friend
With definite certainty, as I see it now
Converged on the North-American continent

The chain of events that made it happen
Was greatly affected by certain people*
It was not a problem to get in here
To find one’s place is what’s not simple

I think my destiny has been set
When I spent a night on Appalachian ridge
In a utility trailer I saw a sunset
A beautiful sky unobstructed by foliage

The Indian spirits had stolen my heart
They put a spell on my free will
They tagged me with magical invisible dart
And now, I live in Lovettsville

At the confluence of two great rivers
The currents converge and pull apart
From the South arrives Shenandoah River
From the North Potomac adds its part

So this is where safe harbor I found
I am ready for anything bright or dark
And even if sea will splash on the ground
My boat is called The Noah’s Ark
