I Write... - Poem by Moses Mtileni

when birth pains propel dormant words to quarell
and folktales refuse to be confined to the ashes of the fireplace
and flowing waters provoke silent rivers to song
i write

when rotting wounds of poverty sting
and roaring factories produce to feed luxurious past-times
and sweat is mocked by a half-crown thrown
i write

to speak for the birds that sing
and tick for clocks that can't
and click with the bells that ring
i write

a response to time's demand on my mind
to tell when silence becomes a costly convenience
and mock lies that twist simple logics
i write
