if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.
if you feel that you are destined for me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
    without leaving mine.

These are my favorite parts of the poem. It's either one thing or the other, no in between. I love the settled tone of this poem.10/10

distance and waiting are some of the things that test love. however as long as neither of a couple's love has given up, love will still stay and grow.2 hearts feeding each other,2 hearts making each other alive. sweetest thing ever. superb piece of poetry! (Report) Reply

Everything carries me to you It is just soulful..
But why does Pablo Neruda say that if his beloved forgets him, he would have already forgotten her? isn't that being a little mean?

One of the finest love poems- - - - Poet sees love's reflection in every thing, animate or inanimate- - - Distance is no barrier as he feels love's presence in every small thing that is near him- - Poet says- -
If I touch near the fire
    the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log
every thing carries me to you
    asif every thing that exists
    aromas, light, metals
    were little boats that sail
towards those isle of yours that wait for me

Again the poet says that love is written in his heart by the beloved's love'If she forgets him, love will automatically obliterated from his heart.
The poem is really a masterpiece.

This struck me as a very powerful poetic expression of love and loving which can differ, dependent upon the mood the reader brings to each reading. This characteristic alone makes this a candidate for being nominated one of the best of the best love poems. (Report) Reply

My favorite line indeed: "If suddenly you forget me do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you." (Report) Reply

Pablo is telling us not to take a lover for granted. I could be a fool in love but when you let it show that you do not love me, there and then I shall become wise. The bottom line is, what we get from a lover is what we give to a lover. (Report) Reply
