In Retrospect Poem by James Odhiambo

In Retrospect

I learnt a lot from you, more than you will ever know
To be patient more and more,
To control my anger, lest the words of my tongue put me in grave danger,
Never to be quick to burn bridges because sometimes we cannot see beyond the hedges.
People can really change beyond our expectations
Let us not overlook evolution.
I miss the friend in you the most, without which I always believed I’d be lost.
Somehow I managed to get by, but even after this long I still cannot say goodbye.
What we had meant more to me than I knew,
There was more than one thing intertwined between me and you.
I know our train is long gone, away
But I cannot help wishing it to pass by again some other day.
I also know we would never capture it the way we did
But maybe I’d regain a friend lost and be glad indeed.
Thanks for the lessons you granted me, taught how to be real,
To be real to myself first before I’m real with anyone else
Mostly, thanks for making me believe in me……….
Within us, we have the power to churn the waves of the ocean stronger than any love portion.
