Poet's Notes about The Poem

This is a Marsiya (Marsia) i.e. an elegiac poem written to commemorate the martyrdom and valour of a noted man.
The form of the marsia generally consists of six-line units, with a rhyming quatrain, and a couplet on a different rhyme and the best versions seem to have arisen in and around Lucknow (a city in Northern India) , probably because it was the centre of the Shia Muslim community.
The Shia community regarded it an act of piety and religious duty to write eulogies to such martyrs and it is generally agreed that this version by Mir Babar Ali Anis is the best there is.
