L'homme Independent.(Translation) . - Poem by Michael Walker

Puisqu'aucun bouchon
Pourrais-tu permettre, d'avoir ete cre si libre.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

See Poem Hunter/ Gwendolyn Brooks/ Poems/ 24/39.
This is a subtle poem about men-women relationships, in which she speaks to a single man, who romances a number of women, without committing himself to marriage or a single, long-term relationship.
He is like a flask of wine, giving joy to a woman short-term. To 'cork' means to get the man to commit himself, seal him off. This man is a free spirit. The last two lines say to me that a woman would be wise to think it good if he only rang the doorbell once a week.
There is a good rhyme scheme: ababbbcb/ dd.
I think this is a witty, life-affirming poem.
