La Plaisanterie Cruelle (The Cruel Joke) - Poem by Vi Ransel

We think,
therefore we are in the driver's seat.
Such hubris
in the face of Nature.
SHE
wields the whip and drives
the hard bargain of survival.

Love
is a cocktail
of collusion and collision.
Pheromones,
estrogen
and
testosterone
dance a tango
below the surface of our awareness
where DNA hijacks the conscious mind
and emotion overrides intellect
leaving us helpless,
at the mercy of our genitals
which conduct a 'relationship'
with another set of genitals
in service
to the propagation of the species
which we choose to label
'love'.
