Late morning mid-August.
The sun shines as I sit beneath the arbor
in our backyard.
As I look up from my book
house finches peck busily at our apples
still not ripe enough for us to eat.
And June bugs green and iridescent
drawn by the same hanging fruit
buzz around the tree in loops
that seem casual for their task.
Above at first I hear then glimpse
two hummingbirds that fiercely skirmish
over the feeder hanging there.
To my right the Texas sage
has burst in buds again from recent rains—
I see a bumble bee and honey bees
diligent about this bush turned store.
It's a lazy moment comfortable and rare—
the day after tomorrow school starts up again
when I'll be working too.
I love it! Not your usual style, but your same keen observation and thoughtfulness. Great poem.
