Makeup Cover Up - Poem by Vickie Felton
Makeup Cover up
Wherever I go
I keep my makeup close
just in case I need to cover up
so you won’t see the real me.
because I’m scared to show you
who I really am.
but I’m afraid,
afraid of what you’ll say
Afraid you might laugh,
I’m afraid you’ll leave me.
I want to take off all of my cover up coats.
I really truly do,
so that I can show you me
for who I really am.
I need you to accept what you see.
If you’ll close your eyes
I’ll strip off all my coats,
one by one,
but please understand how much it hurts
to let anyone see the real me show.
Now that all my coats are gone
I feel awkward, cold, scared.
If you still love me with all that’s left,
You are truly my friend.
I need to save my makeup though,
hold it very close to me,
in case someone doesn’t understand me.
Please protect me
And thank you so much,
for loving me for who I am.
Please let me keep my paintbrush near,
Until I love me as much as you do.
