Mediterranean Girl - Poem by Muzahidul Reza

Indoor by technology, outdoor by speedy transport
I travel the world
Today in Japan, tomorrow in Rome,
Next day by an ancient civilization or in Hawaii or Coast Ivory,
I see, I observe human, nature, society, civilization, earth's form
Develop feelings with the people of country to country
Know their features, culture
I am not self; they, you and me together; friend and brother
I have nothing alone
We have all sharing all among;

Climate and weather is not fit for long
Full of calamities and bitter smell
Neither technology nor transports do well
Idle times were idly passing,
Some long tiring and gloomy days later
A Mediterranean girl, whom I love, has sent me a long letter
In a grey envelop, asking me to tell something
As if, I make out a time;
I was neither indifferent nor interested
But some tensions were tearing me for my friend;

By Mesopotamia Mediterranean sea's land surrounded vast water
By it line after line localities, spirited children's noisy tour
Whose spiritedness is everywhere in the world
For them who have not an empty space deep in mind?

To her writings, things changed a lot suddenly and horribly
Since we had met first near the green locality gaily,
Had observed people living there peacefully
Happiness, pleasure, contentment surrounded them heavenly;

She will tell me the reasons of so long gap
And what really was the fact,
That there were wars so violent
Where man shot man like pig,
Exploded heavy and chemical gunpowder
To fly away all the relics of ancient civilization,
Attempted to turn the green world into desertification
And they had magically succeeded
To draw black plots everywhere in fact,
So, here the rest of humans will live on sands forever;

She will also tell me how she lost her all
How the generations absolutely fell
How their dreams were faded
How dreadful troubles the country faced,
Also that the whole world was against their cry
And now why she is quite dumb to say;

Her letter reminds me the chronological history of wars
Before and after Christ around the human world,
How many kill how many no real statistics of that
And how much are destroyed no such real measures,
Human beings have seen the abuses of ill powers
The savagery of wars and massacres
Especially in 1st and 2nd two gigantic world wars as well as
In various liberation wars between armed and armless forces,
Human world always faces chaos, massacre, misery and loss
From time to time for some brutal leaders;

A time I will make out soon
For our meeting and conversation
Near the red-grey bough and red-ash-silver stream
Where all the distressed souls crawl and scream,
I will also invite all human beings there
To share over which we lament and shed tears.

    Elements of Destruction For Wars:
    In Ancient Greek philosophy it is believed that all matter is made up of four elements: earth, water, air and fire. According to David Osborn, the Greeks believed that our world exists in a simple balance of these four elements. If the delicate harmony of these powerful forces were to be disturbed by human interference, there would be a vast amount of turmoil and chaos on Earth. Within the novel The Wars the author, Timothy Findley, utilizes the elements of earth, water, air and fire to demonstrate the destruction that the war has on not only humans, but on the natural environment. It is seen through the life of Robert Ross that these elements, that are essential for human survival, have been turned into forces of death and destruction. While Robert is on the front lines, the earth and water elements change from being “givers of life to deprivers of life”. Earth is used along with the addition of water to be a platform for sustaining life with plants and vegetation. It also sustains life as the soldiers dig trenches to keep themselves safe from incoming enemy attacks. However the war soon pollutes these elements and turns them into physical hazards. This is seen when Robert finds himself trapped on a collapsing dike and nearly drowns. Theses dikes that have been dug out of the ground have ruined the landscape and therefore collect mud and water which can cause a maelstrom for the soldiers. The mud is also contaminated from the poisonous gas released in the warfare, which Robert discovers after rubbing it on his face and becoming temporarily blind. He expected the mud to cleanse his face but instead it caused havoc as it rendered his vision. So these necessities that Robert relies on have been turned against him as a result of the war. Another instance whereby the earth changed from a place of safety to a hazard that causes death is when Robert’s trench dugout was shelled by enemy mortars.
