Misa De Gallo 2009 Christmas Message - Poem by Francisco R. Albano

COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!
the roosters crow more than thrice.
Riiinnnnggg!
alert clocks and cellphones.
Dong dong dong!
peal temple bells!
Up! Up! Up!
Mama pulls down blankets.
And the apostle Paul booms:
It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep,
for our salvation is closer than we first accepted the faith.
The night is far spent; the day draws near.
Let us cast off deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light
(Romans 13: 11-12) .

[This is the word of the Lord,
1001 lectors announce to the world.]

Need we a call from angel Gabriel?

Rise and shine! –
Wake from sleep of body, mind, heart, and spirit –
for what? for whom?
For grace of repentance and forgiveness
and re/empowerment by the Holy Spirit.
For strength of virtue greater than Samson’s,
and belief in angels livelier than that of Zechariah,
to be servant-leaders, prophets, and priests
of the people of God.

Rise and shine! –
for what? for whom?
That we may always be light of hope
burning the darkness switched on
by Big Business, Big Government, Big Science.
The darkness of global Empire and tarnished Temple.
The darkness of violence, injustice, and ecological degradation
in the people’s struggle for high quality of Life.
That we may be divine light to one another
and to the world, when faith wavers,
hope wanes, and love weakens.

Rise and shine!
