Miss Independent Poem by miss liss

Miss Independent

Sometimes I get so caught up when I’m with you.
I don’t want this to be another chance I blew.
I come to on too strong, I come on too fast,
I need to stop if I want this to last.

It’s about the chase when a guy chooses to commit,
But in this game of tag, I’m the one who’s it.
I’m endlessly running toward what we can become;
Meanwhile you’re wrapping me around your thumb.

You’ve got me attached hook, line, and sinker
This is a dangerous place so I’ve got to be a thinker
I have to protect myself better from getting caught.
Being more independent is my first thought.

I can’t fall for your tricks, I can’t fall for your bait.
I might be a keeper, but its better if I wait.
I need some time to live, I need some time to grow.
In this tedious process I need to be more slow.

I'll build my life around family, friends, and school
If I forgot my religion, I’d be a fool.
I’ll find strength in these that give me support.
They’ll always love me even if I come up short.

When I’m alone, I know I should still feel whole.
Having you complete me is not my goal.
I’m happy, I’m confident, I’m secure, I’m strong
Even if I’m not with you or don’t have you along.

I wanna shine like a star by the light of my moon,
To change my attitude, it’s not too soon.
I wanna be seen as special, beautiful, and unique;
I’m not somebody’s girl who is powerless and weak.

I gotta respect myself before you can respect me
I gotta be strong and be who I’ll be.
I gotta know I can live my life without you there.
I gotta love myself before I can care.

You’re here today, but tomorrow you might not
I don’t want what might leave to be all I got.
So if today you decide to step out those doors,
It won’t be my loss, it would only be yours.
