Mothers And Matrons - Poem by Dr Girija Kumariamma

Never a mother, always a matron.
Mothers are everywhere;
Matrons are rare.
Often the mother came out of the matron,
Scolded, rebuked, and insuslted she went in.
And never uttered a word.
One day came the sage with endless stories.
He became Shaharayar and I his Shaharazade.
I had no other way but listen.
He poured out the endless stream of stories
Stories of delight, stories of rapture, stories of wonder.
I sat dumbfounded.
Then came the final twist.
'Mothers are everywhere
But a mother like you is rare'.
