This is what most of us do. We write something without the Muse telling us and without we having an idea what to to write! To be inspired is the first thing! (Report) Reply

I tell people just to write for that reason

This is not a traditional view of inspiration - it strikes me as uniquely modern. When Hesiod summons the Muse at the beginning of THEOGONY there is no doubt she will tell him what happened before human were witnesses of cosmic events. And the same is true for Milton summoning the Holy Spirit in the Creation section of PARADISE LOST. What you write places much more responsibility on the human imagination because the truth lies within our psyches. All the gods are within, as Joseph Campbell says, including the Muses. (OK, divine girls, start inspiring me!) (Report) Reply

A beautiful sunset is inspiring, but I don't feel obligated to have that inspiration lead me to write of sunsets.

I like this very much. For me personally, I might have made the last line read- but when to begin.
Inspiration gets me to jot down an idea, a beginning, but I'm not always ready to do the work must follow. For that,
I also need to be in the mood. But you captured it perfectly just as is. Love it!

I always have a pen or my laptop by my side. Sometimes the moment I am in causes a single thought to spontaneously arrive in my mind and I will jot down my first impression. Often, that is just one word. The resulting poem does not always reflect the initial reason that word was saved

You seem to do well with your inspiration. (Report) Reply

Thank you, Spock. I wish I could automatically inspire myself
