My Father's Eyes - Poem by lesley herrera

I look at my father
look into my own eyes
still his little girl
with children of my own
I want to sit on his lap
escaping from reality
back to childhood memories
filled with rainbows and dreams
every cloud had a silver lining
sewn by my fathers own hands
when I fall he still picks me up
and shows me how to walk again
one day he will need me
he’ll reach out a take my hand
I’ll paint over the dark gray skies
ocean blue the color of our eyes
I’ll knock down all the clouds
so the sun can shine on him
when daylight turns to an onyx night
I will search to find the brightest stars
write I Love You across the sky
when my father looks into my eyes
he will be looking into his own
I am my father’s daughter
He is who I am
