My Life - Poem by Laura Thacker

My life is like a tree
Growing in the heart of the thicket
Surrounded by others
All struggling to reach the light
Protected by those who have grown above us
Watching those who grow below us
Pushing through the thick underbrush
Competing against all for the chance to live
Through wind, snow, and rain
Growing thicker
Constantly changing and branching out
My life is like a tree
Growing in the thicket of the world
Just trying to survive
The treacherous storms that blow my way
Just trying to enjoy
The beauty of the others around me
Watching as we all grow tall
Until one day we all must fall
I continue to grow
Not knowing when or how I will fall
Yet as I wait for one to yell timber
I continue to grow
Tall as a tree
