We all could see this coming
this death at the last
minute,
this opportunity
tumbling into Mitch's
gleeful, trembling, hands.

He's been waiting,
salivating,
to ambush
the nation
as it fights
for its life.

He's got
just the Fascist,
just the Crypto-Christian,
for the job
- - Senator Tom Cotten,
Arkansas reactionary,
who's thinking
"The South
WILL rise again."

Both are eager
to turn back the clock,
to lock
up SCOTUS
for the next half century
for billionaires, racists,
sexists, theocrats,
corporate fat cats.

With what sadist joy
will Mitch watch
The Supremes
strip voting rights
from non whites,
strip control over their bodies
from women,
knock them both back
to servility
and inequality.

No one
has done more
to eviscerate
our democracy
and once more
make America
a slave state,
no one
has done more
to lay low
our highest ideals
and wage war
on our better angels.

How he yearns
to snuff out
Liberty's light
and cast us all
in darkness.
