Onset - Poem by Kelly Kurt

On its closest approach to the sun
Tilt negates proximity
Northern hemisphere sags under dense, cold air
The accumulated warmth of summer
Stored in soil and rock
Slowly dissipates
Snow fields swell, quickening the cooling
Reflecting warming light back into space
Longer nights passively participate in the collusion
Set in motion eons ago
Cyclically repeated
Winter, the protracted season, commences

Topic(s) of this poem: life, nature, seasons

And so it was....the protracted season begins. This is a lovely translation of the science of winter told in poetry. I love this. This is something only Kelly Kurt can do in a way that respects the science and the art. Well done! :) (Report) Reply

Thank you, Pam. As a child, I was always amazed that we could be millions of miles closer to the sun but freeze our patooties off in winter. : -)

Was it that one wanted Autumn to disappear fast and winter to appear soon? ? Was it because one was loving winter more than Autumn? I wouldn't think so. Perhaps same one will be hoping the winter to go and spring to come in afterwards. Poet sees how expectations keep the life driving on. Quite inspiring. Thanks Kelly for sharing.X (Report) Reply

This year, a strong El Nino is supposed to keep my region warmer than average

Northern hemisphere sags under dense, cold air. Setting in motion and bringing emotion with marvelous expression winter blooms with wise hope and attitudes in this interesting imagery....10 (Report) Reply

At my latitude, four seasons are quite distinct. Winter seems to last 50% longer than any other season though
