'A part of you becomes a part of me from time to time...'
—Joni Mitchell, 'The Last Time I Saw Richard'

Our desperate, mistake-prone, meager lives—
we are prone to sensing someone, something
missing that once was a part of us, subject as
we are to thinking about people, places, the past—
we live through others past and present as we seek
a messenger to answer our most pressing questions.
Answers, however, are almost never forthcoming,
and, all alone, we must fend for ourselves in this
largely absurd, purposeless, devil's-bargain of a life.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
We are social animals who live to be with others, and if not with them, we use memory to compensate for their absence.
