Our Son, Unlike George Floyd, Has Survived Brutal Police Attacks

May 12,2022

-- written for my son Shawn Michael Ryan, and in memory of George Floyd (October 14,1973—May 25,2020)

Our son, unlike George Floyd,
has survived brutal police attacks—
the trauma, however, remains;
the brutality never far away.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Police brutality is a fact of life, and police officers, more often than not, act with impunity because they know state legislatures, legislators, state laws have their backs. In other words, the police are afforded extraordinary legal protections that the ordinary citizen does not have.
