Pain - Poem by Alex Williamson

Pain seeps into the veins of my heart like a fatal infection
It’s relentless grip paralyses my thoughts
My mind goes into a thousand directions
Too many words for pen and paper to comprehend
With every pump of blood, my heart becomes wounded still
The memories burn deep and show no sign of surrender
My stomach climbs to my throat
My knees give way, hands begin to shake
She is dead to me, but alive all the same
I cry her name in the night, only to be returned void
Oh painful memories of old
How deceitful thou art
At what point are they no longer a wonderful gift
But a repeating nightmare
They tear at my insides,
As I lay here and suffer, helplessly
I cannot run
I cannot hide
The thought of her is inescapable
Regret sinks in
And a harsh sadness overtakes me
The things of old have died
Memories no longer flourish,
But wither away
As I take my last breath
And drift off into nothingness
