Poetic Competence - Poem by ivor .e hogg

I like to change the way I write.
Experiment with different forms.
a source to me of great delight.
Defying the accepted norms.

Monometer I very rarely use.
I find that it is limited in scope.
Of all the many meters I can choose.
I tend to use tetrameter and hope.

I hold my readers interest
by choosing words which will convey
exactly what I want to say.
When read aloud, the acid test.

I think the key must be variety
You must display your versatility
to attract a much wider audience
and prove your poetic competence.

What does it matter if I prove
I know the technicalities.
I only write because I love
creating different poetry.
