Rugby - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

In a battle field
Of warriors and gladiators
Is a game that transcends
The thunder of strength and lightning skill
Where an oblong ball is looped from palm to palm
In crab-like side-way passes
And grasped and carried beyond a flagged line
A sport that is fit for the king or the pauper
On royal archer-fields of Scotland
Or on streets of Buenos Aires
When the storming spirit of muscle
Overpowers counter-courage
As man lingers past the final frontier
In the middle of an amphitheater
Called a field of dreams
Where mortality lives side by side
In victory and defeat
