"Cause it makes no sense to waste these words and twenty-five cents
On a losin' game.... You could show just a little feelin' for who I am.... "
- Mary Chapin Carpenter, "You Win Again", You Tube Music Video

Go ahead, manipulate, disappoint me again.
I'm used to it by now; but say "good-bye" again
like you mean it, so I can believe it.What do
feelings matter?(Yours?Mine?Anyone's?)
It looks like you were just fakin' it anyway
(like everyone else does) , just another pretender.
I've come to expect this sort of thing from you—
from that second you that has no feelings for me
as a human being, that is ice-cold towards me.
So please say "good-bye" again like you mean it,
so I can believe it.Be a total pretender.Make me
feel something authentic again, move me, make me
want to love you if only for a hare's breath.
Your eyes, your hair, your voice say everything,
but pretend, say "good-bye" again like you mean it.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
People are pretenders, actors, though they may want to be, so in certain cases one pretends along with them to one's detriment.
