So Terribly Lonely Poem by Belle Wassermeister

So Terribly Lonely

Rating: 5.0

I have never known a woman
in the biblical sense
and probably never will.

I'm thirty-seven years old
and still live with my mother.
Taking care of her is my life.

That's what I tell people.
Actually, she takes care of me
because I can't support myself.

She's twice my age, at seventy-four.
When she is gone,
what in the world will I do?

I was strong once.
As a sophomore in high school,
I earned letters in five sports.

There was baseball, basketball,
track and field,
wrestling and football.

We took the state championship
in those last two and I was named
most valuable player in both sports.

I was handsome and popular.
Girls were very interested but
my parents wouldn't let me date yet.

In my junior year, I got in a car wreck
that was my fault. I was drunk
and my best friend was killed.

I was horribly burned and disfigured.
I can't even look at myself in the mirror.
How could a woman ever look at me?

My friend's parents still hate me
for taking their son away.
I hate myself just as much.

I would love to be able to hold
a woman in my arms and have her
tell me that she loves me.

Maybe in another life.

A poem that tells life as it is. To be able to express your feelings in this way is paramount.

Art must connect with life. This verse is life. A tremendous work.

A short story in poetic form==that is spectacular. The story itself is utterly absorbing and will linger in the reader's memory for a long long time. Belle's touch is gentle yet yearning.

This is a gem of a poem. I do not want to speculate if it arises from personal experience or not.....the fact that you have narrated it so skillfully is what touches my heart. Your pen is mightier than the caliber of a sportsman.

You tell us the most incredible things, often sad that have happened or could. I just hope this isn't real and that it is some poetic tragedy that your prolific, wonderful pen used to make others feel, how lucky they are. In any case, it takes real talent to write such a descriptive and feelings deep, poem like this. Tragically beautiful.
