Soap Opera (Episode #8) - Poem by Bryan Corbett

Soap Opera (episode #8)
"The Family Plot"

the small gathering by the gravesite
of Sheila Alvarez included
a few out-of-town family members
Father Thomas, Sheila's father, Hudson Fowler
and his wife Gretchen, Frank and Bianca Storm
Ricardo and Sheila's two daughters:
Holly,17 and Rebecca,16

Rebecca was quietly crying
Holly was not
they stood at opposite ends of the coffin
the two of them could barely stand being around each other
and their mother's funeral was no exception

while Father Thomas was winding his way
through the 23rd Psalm
Rebecca looked over at her sister
and Holly flipped her the bird

when the priest finished speaking
he made the sign of the cross
as did some of the mourners
Rebecca bent over to kiss the coffin
Holly did not

Holly turned on her heels
and walked down the hill
back to the waiting limousine
that would return the girls
to their now parentless house
where they would receive condolences
from family, friends
and neighbors

Holly would soon be shit-faced drunk
Rebecca would not

to be continued...
