Superman - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

Blitzing like a preying eagle
Blazing a red cape
A courageous warrior storming to the aid
Of damsels in distress
As he streams like the wind
Gushing past the aura
Of concrete coliseums
Caressing the smile of the sun
Grazing the gaze of the moon
Where no villain escapes his fists of steel

Yet beneath his invincible veneer
There is a weeping inner being
Of a man melting to the burning expectation
Of humanity's tryst with immortality
Man's obsessive grail of heroic deed
A man grazing with mortality
Wanting to be loved by a gentle heart
To be stripped bare-naked of his mortal soul

As deep beneath the fascia of the cape
Lies a heart searching for its kryptonite
To love to be loved for his true self
To be vulnerable in his soulful essence
To bleed in the dearth of touch
To melt to the burning beacon of another's heart
To be infected with a love
That transcends fate's lopsided decree
Of valor and bravery

A man searching for the fruits of love
In the orchards of human affection
A man searching for the pearl of mortality
In the oceans of immortal deed
A man hoping to be struck by the thunder of love
Grazing in the meadows of his dreams
A man molting his cape
To metamorphose to the echelon
Of human imperfection
Of just another man
