The Date - Poem by Roneisha Thompson

What's todays date
I think I'm late
Am I hoping or rejecting that the doctor will say I'm expecting
A life inside of me...who knew
That the stick would some day turn blue

I call my mother to give her the news
And she comes with 'I'm too young to be a grandmother' blues
Happy and sad at the same time
I will have something that is all mine

My body is growing
And my mind is knowing
It's no longer about me
Now about the child inside of thee

I have a decision to make
Will I give life or will I take
What about my future plans
My education, my career...where does it all stand
And...how do I tell my man

The conversation ended with a lot of cursing
So, I read between the lines and decided to be the bigger person
We never wanted anything long term
The most he contributed to this relationship was his sperm

What's todays date
It's a week past my due date
The doctor is late
I've began to dilate

It's a baby girl
Now the center of my world
